A salary certificate is a letter from your employer, on company letterhead, signed and stamped, that confirms you work there and states what you’re paid. In the UAE it comes from your employer’s HR team or, for many free zone companies, from the free zone authority’s portal. Banks ask for it when you open a salary account, apply for a loan or credit card, or move your salary from one bank to another.
The part people get wrong is the type of letter. A bank opening a basic account may accept a plain salary certificate. A bank lending you money usually wants a salary transfer letter, which commits your employer to keep paying your salary into that bank.
Salary certificate vs salary transfer letter
| Salary certificate | Salary transfer letter | |
|---|---|---|
| Confirms you’re employed | Yes | Yes |
| States your salary | Yes | Yes, usually gross monthly |
| Names a bank account | No, or only the addressee bank | Yes, the account your salary goes into |
| Employer undertaking | None | Not to move your salary until the bank issues a clearance |
| Typical use | Visa, embassy, tenancy, account opening | Loans, overdrafts, credit cards |
What a bank-ready letter includes
The Emirates NBD salary transfer letter specimen is a good model of what a lender expects. The employer fills in:
- your name, job title and date of joining
- your gross salary per month in AED
- your accrued gratuity or end of service benefit in AED
- the account number your salary will be credited to, and the start month
The employer then confirms three things: it won’t move your salary to another bank until the lending bank gives a clearance certificate, it will notify the bank if your employment ends while a loan or card is outstanding, and it will send your terminal benefits to the bank, after its own dues, if you fail to repay. The letter states that it isn’t a guarantee of repayment. An authorised signatory signs it, with name, designation and the company stamp.
A plain salary certificate needs only the first two bullet points, addressed to the bank or “to whom it may concern”, plus signature and stamp. Ask HR for a breakdown of basic salary and allowances if the bank or embassy asks for one.
How long a salary certificate is valid
Banks treat these letters as short-lived. Emirates NBD accepts a salary transfer letter dated no more than 30 days before you submit it if your employer is a private company. For a government employer, the validity stated in the letter itself applies.
Free zones set their own limit. A DMCC salary certificate is valid for 1 month from issue. Get the letter within a week or two of your bank appointment, not at the start of a long application.
How to get one
From your employer’s HR
Most mainland companies issue certificates through HR on request. Email HR with the addressee (the bank’s name or “to whom it may concern”), the language you need (English, Arabic or both), whether it must show the salary breakdown, and whether it’s a salary transfer letter. If the bank has its own format, attach it so HR fills that in instead of writing a fresh letter.
From a free zone portal
Free zone employees often get the letter from the authority rather than the company:
| Free zone | Where to request | Processing | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMCC | Member Portal, Employment Services, Letters and certificates | 1 working day | Per DMCC schedule of charges |
| Jafza | Dubai Trade Portal, Letter Request | 1 working day | AED 110 |
Jafza’s letter request service has separate salary certificates addressed to a bank, a consulate or embassy, a government agency and a university, in English and Arabic. Only your company’s portal administrator can file it, so the request still goes through your employer.
DMCC issues salary certificates only for active employees on an employment visa, and the company must have no outstanding sanctions on its account.
Federal government employees
Federal employees may not need a paper certificate at all for Emirates NBD. The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources and Emirates NBD set up a direct digital link in January 2025 that lets the bank pull salary information straight from the government system, covering more than 45,000 employees across over 50 federal entities. FAHR plans to add other banks.
When the bank rejects your letter
Common reasons a bank sends the letter back:
- it’s older than the bank’s limit, usually 30 days
- the salary figure doesn’t match the credits on your bank statement
- the stamp or signatory’s name and designation is missing
- it’s a plain certificate when the product needs a salary transfer letter
- it’s addressed to a different bank
Payslips and statements can sometimes stand in. For a salary account at Emirates NBD, a copy of your appointment letter or contract, a payslip, or a statement showing the previous month’s salary is accepted instead of a salary transfer letter.
Your salary record behind the letter
Banks compare the letter with what actually arrives in your account, and private sector salaries are paid under the WPS salary system. If your certificate says one figure and your WPS credits show another, expect questions. A late or missing payment is a separate problem, and a salary not received in the UAE case goes through the employer and MOHRE, not the bank.
FAQ
Who issues a salary certificate in the UAE?
Your employer, through HR, on letterhead with an authorised signature and company stamp. In free zones such as DMCC and Jafza, the request is filed through the free zone portal.
How long is a salary certificate valid for a bank?
Emirates NBD accepts a private sector salary transfer letter up to 30 days old. A DMCC salary certificate is valid for 1 month.
What is the difference between a salary certificate & a salary transfer letter?
A salary certificate confirms your job and pay. A salary transfer letter also names the account your salary goes to and commits your employer not to move it until the bank clears you.
How much does a salary certificate cost in Jafza?
AED 110 through the Dubai Trade Portal letter request service, processed in 1 working day.
Do federal government employees need a salary certificate?
Not for Emirates NBD, which takes salary details through the FAHR direct digital link. Other banks may still ask for the letter.
Before you request the letter

- Get the bank’s own format if it has one and pass it to HR.
